RE: Sold "As-Is"

but in my neck of the woods As-Is = As-Is
We have all read signs that state:
- "At your own risk"
- "We assume no responsibility"
As with "as-is", this can always be overturned in favor of the plantiff. There is no solid protection clause, only those that have not seen a good lawyer challenge.

RE: 8 minute Motorhome!!!

I doubt very seriously if an RV inspector would have found a serious engine problem
Hurricaner is right. A good route is to use certified diesel shops for both engine, transmission and (do not forget) generator.

RE: 8 minute Motorhome!!!

Used units can be great, mediocre or terrible buys, so always insist on a diesel mechanic to check out the engine and do a PDI. Not much can be identified with a 10 minute test drive!
I believe if an RV dealer sold such a unit, they must have been professional enough to notice and understand its condition upon taking it in as trade (and making a buck) and passing it on to a new customer (and making another buck).
So blog the h*ll out of this incident for the next three years as a hobby and hopefully one more RV dealer not worthy of a dime will fall. And who cares about someone else on this forum or wherever who may say, "they treated me great and I got a good deal from them". Or, "you're just destroying the industry." And why would you, or me, care.

RE: Cold weather heat with a diesel pusher

I am running I use the engine preheater to circulate the fluid and turn it on.
I thought the engine preheater was never to be on during engine operation, or so says my Detroit manual.
We run the aqua-hot while driving and it automatically gets a boost from the engine heat without turning on the preheater. We then turn on the dash heater, which is feed by the aqua-hot too, although why they don't put good exchangers in the cab area I have no idea.
You could bolt down a good ceramic electrical heater up front and run it off the inverter when driving. -49, burrr...

RE: I've got the (RESOLUTION) Chassis Batteries blues...

Busskipper, you not alone! This is the same BS encountered last winter.
I had someone test out the battery charging since I thought something was drawing our chassis batteries down dramatically. So much reconstruction was going on, electrically, that I thought someone had goofed.
Basic configuration:
Besides Auto-Start and Battery Boost
- 160-amp alternator/regulator
- 2Kw inverter/charger (3-stage/140-amp)
- 4x8D AGMs on the house
- 2x4D AGMs on the chassis
- Keep-It-Up battery maintainer between banks (not working)
Added:
- Amsolar 600-watt panels
- Amsolar MPPT 3-stage/30-amp controller
- Primary+ cable connected to house batteries
- Secondary+ cable (5-amp) connected to chassis
Added:
- Mastervolt 3-stage/100-amp charger (not used often)
- Primary+ cable connected to house batteries
- Secondary+ cable (10-amp) connected to chassis batteries
Alternator-only Test:
- OK charge chassis batteries
- OK charge house batteries
Shorepower-only test:
- OK charge house batteries
- NO charge chassis batteries
Generator-only test:
- OK charge house batteries
- NO charge chassis batteries
Amsolar-only test:
- OK charge house batteries
- OK charge chassis batteries (minimal amps)
Mastervolt-only test:
- OK charge house batteries
- Ok charge chassis batteries (minimal amps)
Charging conclusion:
- Keep-It-Up Battery Maintainer not connecting banks (duff)
- Chassis battery bank deteriorates when no sun and sitting
- Found loose alternator regulator wire last year and thought all OK
This winter:
- Aqua-Hot runs and same story in that it drags down chassis bank
Question 1:
Could I replace the Keep-It-Up battery maintainer with a small device found over here that when it detects a charge it will connect the banks, but without regulating just 15-amps to the chassis like the Keep-It-Up device does?
Question 2 and 3:
If the coach charge schema comes with a device that connects both banks when a charge is present to house batteries, what does this mean under alternator charging? And because both the Amsolar MPPT controller and Mastervolt charger can charge a primary and secondary bank, why do they still run a secondary+ cable to the chassis bank and would this be conflicting if the banks were connected by the device?
OH MY!...

RE: Would you pay?

Imagine you're at an English campsite where the lawns look like putting greens, the roadways the width of a bike path and you're driving a very ugly-American 45-footer. Yes, I fessed up quite a few times and offered to get the wheelbarrow, shovel and rake. Of course they kindly claimed it wasn't necessary.
Footnote: If you do have a "ground guide", make sure its a good one (she's resting and not peeking over my shoulder while I type).

RE: I've got the (RESOLUTION) Chassis Batteries blues...

Turn your chassis batteries off and see if the AquaHot will still work. If it does not then you need to rewire to the house batteries.
Works!
Even the electrical schematics say the Aqua-Hot runs off the house batteries, but you can never be sure if it was a job on Friday.

RE: I've got the (RESOLUTION) Chassis Batteries blues...

Really good suggestions, but like JohnnyT, I too...
am really confused...
We just ran about a hundred miles with the house and chassis batteries all topped up. It's just about 8 in the evening and the 110v electrical element is off via the circuit breaker. Just diesel is running.
I am wondering though if because the Lambert 415 installed on the coach is not working, then maybe the house battery bank is draining power from the chassis batteries.
See the Lambert 415, like ours, has a green LED and a feature that protects the chassis batteries from being drained while boondocking. Maybe this is what is happening. I will call around to dealers of American motorhomes here and see if they have one in stock. Otherwise, I'll have it shipped over.

RE: I've got the (RESOLUTION) Chassis Batteries blues...

The Aqua-Hot only brings down the Chassis Batteries and has no effect on the House Batteries at all -- they are always in great shape.
With the Generator on (we have an Auto-Start), the house batteries get up to charge, but with the duff "Keep-It-Up Battery Maintainer" (by Lambert Enterprises) not feeding charging amps over, the Chassis batteries only get something from our solar panels (and there is very little sun around presently).
YUP, I have the 1500 watt heating element is on via the circuit breakers, but I believe this only kicks in when shore or generator power is present. Otherwise it doesn't operate from battery power(and why would it drag down the chassis batteries vs the house batteries anyway?) All batteries are AGM and two years old.
I know the Aqua Hot is designed to cut out if there is low voltage from the chassis batteries, but I did not think it drew power from them when in use. But it absolutely seems so in my case!
We are on our way in a bit and I dread turning the key since the Aqua-Hot has been running its course today. I sign up to that yahoo forum.

I've got the (RESOLUTION) Chassis Batteries blues...

Yep, it's frosty cold outside again. On comes the Aqua Hot and down go the chassis batteries. Try and start up that Series 60 to wander down the road and its silence, a couple of alarm chimes and it slowly cranks over. Yes it's the Aqua Hot/Chassis Batteries blues...
To be honest (not like I am not), there is a duff "Keep-it-up Battery Maintainer"(Lambert Enterprises) that sits between the banks that, when not duff, is supposed to detect a charger current from shore or generator to the house batteries and allow 5 amps to the chassis batteries.
Now (over here) I can find a small device that when it detects a current it will connect the two banks (4x8D AGM + 2x 4D AGM), sort of like the manual boost, but that will not regulate the amps into the chassis batteries.
How troublesome would this be?
Meanwhile, "I've got the..."

RE: What is this thing in my rv?

You'll realize what it is as soon as you throw it out :)
A "close aquaintance" threw out a round leather-covered "thing-a-ma-jig" that was strapped into the closet when I complained that we need to cut down on weight. That's when I mentioned it was the table top for the steering wheel when parked. Now she notices all the lamps sitting nicely on them when we are out for an evening stroll.

Between the water heater and water filter, I "think" you got this thing covered, except I saw this same thing happen on the film Dante's Peak, with Pierce Brosnan :)

RE: Gadget - 25% more miles per gallon?

Bumpy, if you go to: www. sunpulse. co.uk (without the spaces), you will find the site. I really do not want it linked to increase its popularity on the net. Under the "Buy Sunpulse" heading you will find a menu of detailed information -- read and laugh!
The claims are so outrageous that one cannot begin to take it seriously.
But... after the RV show, there was a host of European motorhomers querying if this was a good buy on forums. Just goes to show that many will fork out the cash for such things.

Gadget - 25% more miles per gallon?

We're parked up at a motorhome show in Europe and there is this guy circulating a flyer for a device that "easily fits on your battery in two minutes" that supposedly "ups your HP and Torque and makes your engine more responsive, drive better and provides up to 25% more miles per gallon"
:?
You won't find me a customer, but has anyone heard of such a device developed in Japan that creates "new electronic impulses to improve engine ignition and combustion conditions, reduce CO Emission and maintain your battery, as long as your engine has an ECU (injected)"
I say BS, but what do the techs on here say?
EDIT: I HAVE TAKEN OFF THE LINK TO HIS WEBSITE JUST IN CASE SOMEONE DOES BELIEVE IT. HATE TO HAVE THAT ON MY CONSCIOUS!

RE: Jake Brake ??

Foretravel and Featherlite/converter-Prevost come to mind as the predominent users of transmission retarders in motorhomes. And most (if not all) Detroit Series 60 engines, as ours, has a 3-stage Jake Compression Brake. I would think a transmission retarder would be superior option to the compression brake though and an exhaust/pac brake would slot in before brakes only.
Is there something else?

RE: Help me, I think that I am getting bus fever!

Here is a 1998 Vogue on a Prevost chassis with matching trailer and 160,000 miles. Still not cheap either.
Sadly, a gone era Here it is!
But you can still order a new Country Coach on a Prevost chassis, which makes the older ones (era 1995) a good deal today.
There are many advantages in purchasing a pre-loved bus conversion direct from the manufacturer since they take them in trade when upgrading their customers. They then just want to get them off the lot rapidly and will do surprisingly good deals, throwing in many servicing incentives like new tires etc. You got to act quick though.

RE: Help me, I think that I am getting bus fever!

Cody, some Vogues are bus conversions on Prevost chassis.
On edit: some Country Coach motorhomes are bus conversions built on Prevost chassis as well.
I know we are battering this topic to death in a good way and so the OP can now search the net for different alternatives. Then again, some bus platforms and converters are better than others -- so a whole new topic we can keep this going on :)

We're still on tour over in Europe and sitting admist thousands of motorhomes, quite a few American, but the vast majority European. Just down the row is a real-deal Eagle (hobbiest converted) with the 8V-71 engine. It's dark outside, but I hope to post a pic of it tomorrow.
